Jo's Crochet Flower Garland How-To
Skill level: Easy
You need:
- some yarn (leftovers from other projects for example)
- a crochet hook that suits your yarn
- scissors
- a large eyed needle to weave in loose ends
Stitches and abbreviations:
- sl st = slip stitch
- ch = chain stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- dtr= double treble
Directions:
First you need to crochet a lot of flowers. Take your preferred flower pattern, look up the flowers at crochet pattern central or try this one:
Super fast and easy little flower
Inner part of flower
with yarn A: ch 2, 5 sc in second ch from hook, sl st in first sc to close ring.
Fasten Off
flower petals
attach yarn B in one sc, (in same sc work ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st, sl in next sc) Repeat around until you have 6 petals. (The last petal is worked in the sl st of the last row, that closed the ring).
Fasten Off
Vines and Leaves
Special stitches and abbreviations:
- *make leaf = ch 10, work backwards over these 10 chains:sl st in 2nd chain from hook, sc in the next chain, hdc in the next chain, dc in the next chain, jhtr** in the next chain, tr in the next chain, hdc in the next chain, sc in the next chain, slst in the next chain
- **jhtr = Jo's half treble .It is not really a half treble and I don't know, what it is called corectly or if anybody else uses it. However this is what I do:
yarn over twice, insert hook in designated st or row, pull up lp on hook, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, yo, pull through last 3 lps on hook (Maybe this stitch could be replaced by a long double crochet.
Start with a horizontal part of the vine:
[ch 20, make leaf*] repeat if you want more leaves at that horizontal part or add your fist vertical brance.
long vertical hanging part of the vine with a flower:
ch 30, make leaf,
ch 20, make leaf,
ch 20, attach a flower by working a dc in one of it's petals, (this is the tip of the branche, now you go up the stem again),
sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach next leaf, sl st in base of leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach next leaf, sl st in base of leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch (vertical branch made).
horizontal part of the vine:
[ch 20, make leaf] repeat if you want more leaves at that horizontal part or add your fist vertical brance.
short vertical hanging part of the vine with a flower:
ch 30, attach a flower by working a dc between two of it's petals,
ch 20, make leaf (this is the tip of the branche, now you go up again)
sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach the flower, sl st in back loop of dc,
sl st in next 10 ch (short vertical branch made).
horizontal part of the vine:
[ch 20, make leaf*] repeat if you want more leaves at that horizontal part or add your fist vertical brance.
medium vertical hanging part of the vine with two flowers:
ch 30, attach a flower by working a dc between two of it's petals,
ch 20, make leaf,
ch 20, make leaf (this is the tip of the branche, now you go up again),
sl st in next 10 ch, attach a flower by working a dc between two of it's petals,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach next leaf, sl st in base of leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach the flower, sl st in back loop of dc,
sl st in next 10 ch (medium vertical branch made).
horizontal part of the vine:
ch 20, make leaf*,
ch 20, attach a flower by working a dtr between two of it's petals,
vertical hanging part of the vine with flower:
ch 30, make leaf,
ch 20, make leaf (this is the tip of the branche, now you go up again),
sl st in next 10 ch, attach a flower by working a dc between two of it's petals,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach next leaf, sl st in base of leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf
sl st in next 10 ch (vertical branch made).
horizontal part of the vine:
[ch 20, make leaf*] repeat if you want more leaves at that horizontal part or add your fist vertical brance.
long vertical hanging part of the vine with flower:
ch 30, make leaf,
ch 20, make leaf,
ch 20, attach a flower by working a dc in one of it's petals, (this is the tip of the branche, now you go up again)
sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach next leaf, sl st in base of leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch until you reach next leaf, sl st in base of leaf,
sl st in next 10 ch (vertical branch made),
continue to crochet horizontal and vertical vine parts in this way until you reach the desired length of your garland.
End with a horizontal part, for example like this:
[ch 20, make leaf*],
ch 20
Now you just have to crochet all the way back over the horizontal vine parts:
sl st in next ch stitches until you reach the next leaf, sl st in base of leaf,
[sl st in next 10 ch, make leaf, sl st in next 10 ch until you reach next leaf, sl st in base of leaf]. Repeat until you reach the end (starting point) of your garland. This way, there will be a leaf each 10 chs. Whenever you come to the top of a brance work a sl st in the corresponding ch instead of making a leaf.
Fasten Off. Weave in loose ends and decorate something with your new flower garland! :-)
